Kantar-GeoPoll Media Measurement (KGMM) collects overnight data on audience size, ratings, and share for TV and radio, 365 days a year. KGMM uses a 4-hour recall mobile survey methodology to produce the most accurate diary data available in many African countries.  This report includes KGMM data for the top TV stations in Uganda over a 3-month period, from July 1 – September 30, 2015.  You can view more KGMM audience measurement data and filter it by location and demographics by registering for an account here.

Below is a chart showing the top 10 stations in Uganda by audience share. As in the last quarter, NTV is the clear leader in audience share, followed by Bukkede, which dropped in share by 5%.  UBC and NBS, which were ranked third and fourth respectively last quarter, have switched positions with NBS overtaking UBC, although the two stations remain very close in audience share.

We observed several differences in ratings for male and female viewers from July to September.  For example, Bukkede has higher ratings among females, who generally tune in after 20:30.  Bukkede’s overall share is also higher with females, with a share of 26% among females compared to just 17% among males. NTV is popular with both males and females, with a share of 33% among males and 29% among females.

KGMM is available on a subscription basis in Uganda and a free version of KGMM is currently available exclusively to Ugandan broadcasters. Click below to register for an account using referral code “UGANDA” and a GeoPoll representative will contact you shortly to activate your account.

*Rating is the proportion watching a station out of the total sample at that time, multiplied by 100. If 50 people out of 500 surveyed watched Station X, the rating for Station X would be (50/500)*100) = 10. In Uganda, KGMM includes a sample of over 500 respondents for every time period.

**Share is the proportion watching Station X, out of all those watching at that time. This is equal to the proportion watching a station during a given time divided by the total number watching at that time.

Using the daily data collected through Kantar-GeoPoll Media Measurement, GeoPoll has analyzed the top radio stations in Uganda for the past three months from May 1st – July 31st. We examined both ratings* and share** for the top stations in Uganda. The below chart shows the average ratings for the top channels during the day from 06:00 to 22:00 (6am to 10pm).

Ratings-1

It is important to note the presence of a lot of stations in Uganda which are mostly regionalized. The net effect of this is that the listenership is fragmented and 44.6% of listeners are tuning into the “other” grouping of many smaller stations, which are not represented in the chart above.

CBS Radio FM, Capital FM and Radio Simba have higher listenership ratings throughout the day compared to the other stations. CBS Radio listeners appear to be tuned more in the morning period between 06:00 – 10:00. Capital FM gets slightly higher ratings between 10:00-12:00 when their show ‘AM to PM’ airs.

GeoPoll also examined average share over the entire period from May 1st – July 31st.  While 44.6% are listening to stations other than the top national stations listed here, GeoPoll found that Capital FM, CBS Radio and Radio Simba get the highest share with 9.6%, 9.0% and 8.5% respectively. We note an almost similar share between NBS FM, Galaxy FM and Bukkede FM, who all get between 4-5% of the audience share.

For comparison, the chart below also shows listenership share from February – April.  The top 2 stations both experienced a loss in their listenership share in the period between May and July.  Radio Simba had a significant increase in share from 6.48% to 8.53% in the same period.

Uganda’s media industry is thriving, and the introduction of several new television stations over the past decade has increased competition for viewers. Until the early 2000s the state-run channel, Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) had virtually no competition, but since then several new channels have been introduced, with some taking over UBC’s lead in viewers. NTV Uganda, part of Nation Media Group which operates throughout East Africa, was launched in 2006 and is one of the most popular stations currently. Bukkede1 and Bukkede2, part of the New Vision media group, are also popular among Ugandan viewers.

In October, GeoPoll’s Audience Measurement Service found that Bukkede1 was the most popular TV station, with an average of 651,000 viewers per half hour time block. This is followed closely by NTV, who had 539,000 viewers per half hour in October. These two stations dominate in viewership; Urban, UBC, and NBS rank 3rd-5th in terms of viewership, all with less than 220,000 viewers per half hour. WBS and Bukkede2 both had around 150,000 viewers per half hour in October.

These rankings demonstrate the popularity of Bukkede1 and NTV, particularly their primetime programming. Bukkede1’s peak hour of viewing was from 8:30-9:30pm each evening, with a high average of 954,000 viewers at 8:30pm. NTV’s highest viewing hour in October was at 9pm, when the live show “NTV Tonight” airs, with an average of 730,000 viewers tuning in each day. By contrast UBC’s largest audience size is from 5:00-6:00pm, with nearly 250,000 viewers tuning in at 5:30pm.

Below are the top Ugandan TV stations in October by viewers per half hour:

1) Bukedde1: 651,000 viewers

2) NTV: 539,000 viewers

3) Urban: 217,000 viewers

4) UBC: 215,000 viewers

5) NBS: 208,000 viewers

6) WBS: 152,000 viewers

7) Bukedde2: 148,000 viewers
